Background
Gasland is a 2010 documentary directed and produced by Josh Fox. The filmmaker embarks on a cross-country journey to uncover the secrets and impact surrounding fossil fuels specifically the fracking petroleum industry. As companies continue to search for usable land for drilling oil, they demand American-rural landowners to give up their property for it to be available to lease.
Fox himself received a letter in May 2008 from a gas company, offering a signing bonus of nearly $100,000 to lease his family’s land in Milanville Pennsylvania. This offering is what motivated him to set out to find other communities experiencing the same situation. He begins with locations across Pennsylvania and then drives as far as Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and Texas. He meets citizens from each state and discovers that their water, air, water wells, and surface water are all contaminated due to nearby hydraulic fracturing sites.
This led to a series of chronic health problems and even tap water that can be lit on fire due to the large amount of chemicals in their drinking water. One family in Texas had all gotten asthma from the pollutants in the air and were seeing cases of cancer start to arise. This documentary was an eye-opening experience of the importance of the anti-fracking movement.
