Indoors

Use a water-saving dishwasher

A water-saving dishwasher uses only 3 gallons of water per load while handwashing dishes takes on average 27 gallons. Some brands include the Amana ADB1400AGS at Best Buy and the Hisense HUI6220XCUS at Lowe’s.

Shorten your showers

Even a 20-minute shower uses 50 gallons of water. You can save up to 15 gallons per month and reduce your water bill.

Always choose the proper load size

Nearly 22% of indoor home water use comes from doing laundry. Save water by making sure to adjust the settings on your machine to the proper load size.

Reduce meat consumption

To produce one pound of beef, it takes around 1,800 gallons of water!

Use a reusable water bottle

Plastic water bottles are fossil fuel intensive and require more liters of water to create the bottle than the amount of water it holds.

Avoid using garbage disposals often

Use compost bins, sink strainers, or recycling to conserve water.

Outdoors

Use a pool cover

A pool cover keeps your pool clean, reduces water usage, and limits chemicals.

Plant native species

This reduces the competition for natural resources such as water and nutrients.

Use porous materials

Porous materials are able to soak up water which reduces runoff and keeps water in your yard.

Wash your pet outdoors

This allows water to be used for two purposes: keeping your pet clean and feeding the lawn.

Use timers for watering

They help conserve water, balance soil moisture levels, and improve crop yields.

Check leaks periodically

Water leaks can be silent and degrade the environment. Make sure to check unsuspecting areas in your home.
