The Hidden Dangers of Gel Polish: What You Need to Know

Gel manicures are everywhere. They’re glossy, long-lasting, and chip-resistant- a dream come true for anyone who loves perfectly polished nails. But behind the shine, there are some important risks worth knowing about before you book your next appointment.

1. UV Exposure

Most gel manicures require curing under UV or LED lamps. While LED lights use a lower intensity, both still emit ultraviolet light. Repeated exposure increases the risk of premature skin aging and in rare cases skin cancer on the hands. Dermatologists often recommend applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen on your hands or wearing UV-protective gloves during the process.

2. Chemical Concerns

Some gel polishes contain chemicals like formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate which are ingredients linked to allergic reactions, respiratory issues, or hormone disruption. While many brands advertise “3-free” or “5-free” formulas, not all are transparent about their ingredients.

3. Environmental Dangers

The beauty industry’s environmental footprint is often overlooked, and gel polish is no exception.

Plastic pollution: Gel polishes often contain microplastics and synthetic polymers that don’t break down, contributing to long-lasting pollution when removed and washed away.

Chemical waste: Acetone and other solvents used for removal are toxic and harmful if not disposed of properly. When poured down drains, they can pollute waterways and affect aquatic ecosystems.

Energy consumption: Curing lamps, especially in salons with heavy use, add to energy demand which indirectly increases carbon emissions.

4. Risk of Infection

When nails are weakened by gel manicures, they’re more vulnerable to fungal or bacterial infection. Small cracks in the nail or surround skin can let pathogens in epically if salon hygiene isn’t up to standard.

Safter Alternatives and Tips

  • Give your nails regular breaks to recover
  • Use sunscreen or protective gloves during curing
  • Moisture cuticles nails with nourishing oils
  • Choose salons that practice safe, eco-friendly disposal methods
  • Look for eco-friendly or “10-free” polishes that avoid the most toxic chemicals and minimize environmental harm
