Water-Saving Wednesday

Did you know the average faucet releases 2 gallons of water per minute? Every time we turn on the faucet, flush the toilet, or run a load of laundry, we’re using a vital resource that millions of people around the world struggle to access. Water-saving Wednesday is all about reminding ourselves that the little things we do add up to big results.

Why Water Conservation Matters

  1. Scarcity: only 1% of Earth’s water is fresh and accessible for human use.
  2. Energy connection: treating and transporting water uses a huge amount of energy, meaning saving energy also cuts emissions.
  3. Cost saving: water saving saves the planet and your utility bill.

Approaches to Water Saving

Turn off the tap

When brushing your teeth or washing dishes, turn off the water until you actually need it. This can save up to 200 gallons a month in a single household.

Shorten showers

Just 2 minutes or less under the water stream saves around 10 gallons per shower!

Load laundry smartly

Always run full loads in the washing machine on the cold setting.

Reuse water when you can

Collect water while rinsing vegetables or half-finished drinking glasses to water your plants.

Fix leaks

A leaky faucet dripping once per second wastes over 3,000 gallons of water a year- enough to take 180 waters.

A Challenge for Today

This Wednesday pick just one habitat from the list and give it a try. You might be surprised how quickly it becomes second nature.
