Toxic-Free Thursday

We often think of sustainability in terms of recycling, saving water, or reducing plastic- but what about the products we use every day inside our homes? Many common cleaners, cosmetics, and personal care products contain harmful chemicals that affect our health and the planet.

On Toxic-Free Thursday, we will focus on simple swaps to reduce harmful chemicals in our daily lives.

Why Go Toxic-Free?

1. Health first

Damaging chemicals in cleaners and skincare can irritate skin, lungs, and eyes with some even linked to long-term health care problems.

2. Cleaner air

Indoor air can be more polluted than outdoor air, partly due to chemical-based sprays and candles.

3. Safer for ecosystems

Many chemicals can end up in waterways and food webs, damaging habitats and soil health.

Approaches to Toxic-Free Living

DIY all-purpose cleaner

Mix vinegar, water, and a few drops of lemon or essential oil for a natural cleaner that works on most surfaces.

Choose fragrance free

Most cleaners with fragrances contain toxins. Choose environmental-friendly cleaners in a glass bottle.

Skip aerosols

Air fresheners and sprays often release VOC’s, a toxin that can cause a range of short term and long-term health effects. Instead use baking soda for odors and try natural candles with beeswax.

A Challenge for Today

This Toxic-Free Thursday pick one swap to try. Maybe it’s mixing your own cleanser, switching to fragrance-free laundry, or simply opening your windows for fresh air. Each small change makes your home healthier and reduces your expenses for cleaning supplies.
